The pirarucu is a Jurassic fish, over 200 million years old. Today, the pirarucu plays a vital role in the culture and local economy of the Amazon. But it wasn’t always this way. Predatory fishing and lack of regulation pushed the pirarucu to the brink of extinction. In response, Amazonian indigenous and riverside communities began organizing to protect the fish. By combining local wisdom with scientific knowledge, a practice known as Sustainable Pirarucu Management emerged. This regulation and social organization were crucial for the survival of the species.
The pirarucu has been the primary source of protein for native populations for thousands of years. Its skin, however, used to be discarded as it had no practical use. Today, what was once discarded plays a fundamental role in the Amazonian circular economy, becoming one of the most beautiful materials in fashion: sustainable pirarucu leather.
Nova Kaeru actively participates in the Sustainable Pirarucu Management, collaborating with local indigenous and riverside populations. Our mission goes far beyond the final product; it is a commitment to the fight against predatory fishing, the preservation of the Amazon Rainforest, and support for local communities. Nova Kaeru works closely with organized fishing cooperatives, collaborating intensively to improve living conditions, foster social empowerment, and protect biodiversity.
